Each summer I speak at camps and retreats around the country. Every time I speak to students and see in their eyes a renewed enthusiasm for the gospel, a fire that is renewing their commitment to Christ, I get a thrill. What a treat to see God work in our lives. My heart is renewed. I love it. But I have a concern.

What follows is 100% true… I left Orlando this past Sunday night at 1:45 a.m. Pacific on a red-eye flight from LAX to Orlando (red-eye flights are overnight ones where you get little sleep and hence have red-eyes the next day). I had been up since 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, and by the time I landed in Orlando at Noon on Monday I had one hour of sleep in the previous 27 hours. I’ve finished Tim Keller’s book “Counterfeit Gods” and have not been disappointed. I highly recommend it to you. The men’s study I lead is going through it and it is a remarkable book. Finishing the book was the culmination of a solid year of heart searching about why I do all that I do. I must humbly and embarrassingly admit that what I’ve found in the recesses of my heart was not good.

I love basketball. I always have because it was a sport I could play alone. I had five sisters, no brothers and my dad worked a lot to provide for our family. A lot of my “guy time” was spent alone, and the basketball court was my constant companion.
