When Saint Paul called Jesus a humble servant who “made himself nothing” in A.D. 61 (Phil. 2:5-11), he was not simply reciting a cute poem. He was summarizing the very character of Jesus in his historical life, death, and resurrection. Indeed, if we like Paul, were to meditate on the depths of Jesus‘ condescension from a supreme heavenly reign to a life on earth caring for sick and dying people (physically and spiritually), we might also be awestruck by the reality that in Jesus Christ a subject and a verb come together that no one could have anticipated: GOD SERVES. He didn’t have to.

A good television cartoon not only entertains, but also instructs. Now, I’m no cartoon watcher per se—I’m 28 years old. But I have two kids and sometimes mommy and daddy need a break. Hence, my inner child has been recently resuscitated as cartoons are now once again in my life. And I’ve been amazed by the wealth of sermon illustrations packed into these cartoons! (If only my primary audience was either children with adult intellect or college students addicted to cartoons.)

I am not the handiest person I know. In fact, my typical bright spot when it comes to household projects is changing the batteries on the TV remote. Because of this, my usual trips to Lowe’s Home Improvement are nothing more than a search for new light bulbs or a gift for someone else. All this makes what happened in our backyard a few years ago nothing short of a miracle.

Think Guacamole. That was the color of the carpet in the home I grew up in. Perhaps you find the thought of someone actually having “guacamole green” carpet hard to believe. If so, you are not the first. I'll explain. When I was in middle school, tragedy arrived to our family in the form of a house fire. In the days following, we spent the afternoons searching our ash-filled home for items to salvage.
